Chapter 18

Gabriela

Gabriela startled at this new idea, and she felt Michael’s shock, even as she heard his voice in her head.

It does make sense of the trident.

Gabriela wasn’t as sure. “But the compound is almost never near an ocean—or even a river or lake. He pretty much always chooses somewhere completely landlocked, often in the mountains or desert. Wouldn’t Poseidon be more interested in having us all by the sea?”

Michael’s thought broke in. They taught you about Greek gods at the compound?

Clearly, he was surprised she even knew about him.

Well, my mother mentioned him once or twice, although mostly when she was muttering to herself.

Given what Father Deacon did to her, that’s not surprising.

Good point.

Their hosts looked at each other for a moment, before Thorschild answered.

“It seems odd to us, too, but it’s the rumor we’ve heard.”

She gave another glance back to Cain.

“And I can think of a way to test it.”

As that was more than she could, Gabriela and Michael followed Thorschild out of the house with the vampires in tow.

Despite the fact that Gabriela was trying to mend her old ways and dismiss the lies she’d been taught, she stayed well on Michael’s other side from them. Even in pirate gear—why, she had no idea—or pregnant, those with sharp fangs freaked her out.

They ended up beside the ocean, Thorschild pointing at it. “Feel any special connection?”

Sighing, Gabriela stared at the sun shining off the waves. It was entirely beautiful, but she couldn’t say she was getting any “Bow down before me, small ocean creatures!” vibe.

“I’ve never actually seen it before,” she admitted.

“Is this truly the sea?” Michael asked, turning to Cain. “These vampires can be in the sun without harm here, so isn’t this more of an illusion?”

“It’s real,” Thorschild assured them.

“It . . .” Cain started, then sighed, looking at Gabriela. “I was raised in a cult, too. It was a little different than yours, but there was a lot about magic I was never taught, so my own natural magic kind of went where it wanted.”

Looking sheepish, he had his hands in the pockets of his jeans but calmed a little as Thorschild put her arm through his.

“It’s real, but please don’t ask me to explain. My magic’s kind of wild, and I have no idea how I did it.”

“Wild”? Gabriela wondered.

For witches, that usually means untrained.

Ah.

She looked back to Cain then the sea. Still, there was no flashing sign in her mind telling her how to harness it.

As she watched, Thorschild had her head on Cain’s shoulder.

“I didn’t know about my father being Thor, but his lightning kind of escaped me once in a while. When I started realizing that it was my power to conduct as I wanted, I found that there was this place inside me where it all connected. I can’t really explain, but, if we’re right, you may be able to access something like that, as well.”

Gabriela knew she probably should try, wasn’t certain if she were just attempting to avoid
